Summary:
The RocksDB GitHub repository moved from github.com/facebook/rocksdb to github.com/meta/rocksdb. Nearly all GitHub Actions jobs are gated on `github.repository_owner == 'facebook'` (to keep them from running on forks), so after the move those jobs were skipped on new PRs and pushes, and in the nightly and weekly schedules.
This change updates the repository for the new location:
* Fix: All `repository_owner` checks in the workflows now compare against 'meta', so the PR, nightly, weekly, and clang-tidy jobs run again.
* Change: CI container images now come from ghcr.io/meta/rocksdb_ubuntu, and the Dockerfile build/push instructions match.
* Change: Workflow names facebook/rocksdb/* are now meta/rocksdb/*. The Claude review workflow triggers on the pr-jobs workflow by name, so its `workflow_run` trigger is updated to match. (Required status checks are keyed by job name, not workflow name.)
* Change: Every github.com/facebook/rocksdb URL in the repo now uses github.com/meta/rocksdb. This covers URLs used by CI and build scripts (third-party-deps release downloads, including DEPS_URL for Java builds; git remotes in setup-upstream and check_format_compatible.sh), the docs site config (`ghrepo`) and navigation, Maven SCM metadata, and links in code comments, docs, HISTORY.md, and blog posts. Historical links are included because GitHub's redirect from the old URL is not dependable for every link: some old issue URLs return 404 while the same issue under meta/rocksdb works.
* Change: build_tools/format-diff.sh finds the upstream remote by matching either meta/rocksdb.git or facebook/rocksdb.git, because existing clones still use the old remote URL (which GitHub redirects for git operations).
* Remove: The stale CircleCI status badge from README.md. CircleCI is no longer used.
* Add: A final step in nightly's build-format-compatible job that fails if https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb stops redirecting to https://github.com/meta/rocksdb (or the old name is taken by another repo). Existing releases (e.g. DEPS_URL in java/Makefile as of v11.12), existing clones, and external links still depend on that redirect, so this alerts the RocksDB team if it breaks. The step runs even when the compatibility test fails.
Not addressed here: runner labels (16-core-ubuntu, etc.) and secrets are configured per GitHub org, outside the repo. Any that are missing in the meta org need to be set up there.
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/meta/rocksdb/pull/15508
Test Plan:
CI on this PR exercises the main fix: jobs should run instead of being skipped.
Manual checks from an unrestricted network:
* https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb returns a single 301 to https://github.com/meta/rocksdb, then 200, and `git ls-remote` via the old URL works. Old pull, wiki, blob, and release-download URLs redirect, but old issue URLs for https://github.com/meta/rocksdb/issues/9275, https://github.com/meta/rocksdb/issues/10080, and https://github.com/meta/rocksdb/issues/13293 returned 404 (https://github.com/meta/rocksdb/issues/12038 redirected) even though all four exist under meta/rocksdb.
* A CI log showed ghcr.io/meta/rocksdb_ubuntu:22.1 pulling successfully.
The new nightly step won't run before merge. The exact curl command it uses printed the expected `200 https://github.com/meta/rocksdb` when run manually. Separately, its script was extracted from the parsed workflow YAML and run against a stub curl: it passes for a redirect to meta, fails for a 404 and for a 200 without redirect, and reports a network failure distinctly. After merge, a manual workflow_dispatch of the nightly workflow can confirm it in CI.

Summary:
`TransactionLogIterator` iterates the write-ahead log. It does not return transactions, does not require `TransactionDB`, and in fact returns `Status::NotSupported()` for two of the three `TransactionDB` write policies (WritePrepared and WriteUnprepared). The name predates `TransactionDB` and comes from "transaction log" being an old synonym for WAL. Everything else in this header was already renamed away from that terminology -- `LogFile` -> `WalFile`, `VectorLogPtr` -> `VectorWalPtr` -- and the C API has long used `rocksdb_wal_iterator_t` and `rocksdb_wal_iter_*`. This finishes the job.
The public class is now `WalIterator` in `include/rocksdb/wal_iterator.h`. `include/rocksdb/transaction_log.h` remains as a forwarding header and `TransactionLogIterator` remains as an alias, both marked deprecated by comment only (not `[[deprecated]]`) so existing users compiling with -Werror are unaffected, matching how `LogFile` and `VectorLogPtr` were retired. `DB::GetUpdatesSince()` keeps its name.
More importantly, the documentation was incomplete in ways that could cost a user data, so this states plainly what the API has always done:
- It only sees the WAL. Writes made with `WriteOptions::disableWAL`, and sequence numbers consumed by `IngestExternalFile()`, advance the DB sequence number without producing a WAL record. They leave permanent holes that end iteration. This was not documented anywhere, so it was unreasonable to expect a user to know those features silently break WAL tailing.
- The three iterator states, in particular that `!Valid()` with an OK `status()` means caught up rather than finished, and that calling `Next()` again is the intended way to tail a DB. The old comment on `Next()` said "REQUIRES: Valid() to be true", which forbids the primary use case.
- `Status::TryAgain`, which a caller must handle but which appeared nowhere in the public headers.
- That `GetUpdatesSince(seq)` silently starts later when `seq` is unavailable. Combined with the above this is the sharp edge: recovering from a spent iterator means calling `GetUpdatesSince()` again, so the recovery step is exactly where data can be skipped unnoticed. A consumer applying these batches to a copy of the DB diverges permanently and undetectably if it misses one, so the header now says such consumers must verify continuity themselves using `BatchResult::sequence` and `WriteBatch::Count()`.
Almost all of this diff is mechanical: renaming the type and its files, updating `#include` paths, rewriting comments, and updating build lists (`src.mk`, `CMakeLists.txt`, `BUCK`, `java/Makefile`, `java/CMakeLists.txt`). `db/c.cc` is regenerated from `tools/c_api_gen/c_base.cc`. Reviewers should focus on the four places that are not:
1. `WalIteratorImpl::UpdateCurrentWriteBatch()` in `db/wal_iterator_impl.cc` (renamed from `db/transaction_log_impl.cc`) drops dead code. On a sequence discontinuity it set `current_status_` to `NotFound` and then called `SeekToStartSequence()`, which returns immediately when `current_status_` is not OK. That guard and the early return in `Next()` were both added by fe63899d1 ("Add checks to GetUpdatesSince", https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/9459), which made the reseek unreachable without mentioning it. The surviving behavior -- a discontinuity ends the run with `NotFound` -- is what the class has always documented, so this deletes the unreachable reseek and the comment claiming it can restore an OK status rather than resurrecting it. There is no observable change: `Valid()` is `started_ && is_valid_`, `is_valid_` is false either way, and a non-OK `current_status_` already makes `Next()` a no-op.
2. `WalIteratorImpl::IsBatchExpected()` in the same file drops "Log iterator will reseek the correct batch." from its info log message, since it no longer does.
3. `org.rocksdb.WalIterator` now holds the implementation and the nested `BatchResult`, and `org.rocksdb.TransactionLogIterator` becomes a subclass of it. Existing Java code keeps compiling, `RocksDB.getUpdatesSince()` keeps its return type, and `TransactionLogIterator.BatchResult` still resolves through inheritance. Because the native methods are now declared on `WalIterator`, the JNI entry points in `java/rocksjni/wal_iterator.cc` (renamed from `transaction_log.cc`) become `Java_org_rocksdb_WalIterator_*`.
4. `BatchResultJni::getJClass()` in `java/rocksjni/portal.h` looks up `org/rocksdb/WalIterator$BatchResult` to match.
Pull Request resolved: https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/15056
Test Plan:
Adds three tests to `db_log_iter_test.cc` that pin the semantics now being documented, none of which had coverage:
- `CaughtUpThenResumes` -- an iterator that has run out of records is `!Valid()` with an OK `status()`, and a later write to the same WAL is picked up by calling `Next()` again. This is the tailing pattern the old `Next()` comment prohibited.
- `GapFromDisableWAL` -- a `disableWAL` write between two normal writes ends the run with `NotFound` instead of skipping to the later sequence number, and the iterator stays spent across further `Next()` calls.
- `SilentlySkipsUnavailableStart` -- `GetUpdatesSince(1)` where sequence 1 never reached the WAL returns OK and positions at sequence 2, documenting the silent skip.
`IngestExternalFile()` is documented as the other source of holes but is not covered by a test; it needs `SstFileWriter` setup and is worth a follow-up.
The Java rename is verified by `WalIteratorTest`, which declares `WalIterator` while `RocksDB.getUpdatesSince()` still returns `TransactionLogIterator`, so the compatibility subclass is exercised on every use. It is otherwise an identifier-only rename of the previous test.
Renames the C++ test fixture to `DBWalIteratorTest`, drops the now-redundant `TransactionLogIterator` prefix from its test names, and updates the comments in `wal_manager.cc`, `sync_point.h` and `fs_posix.cc` that refer to those tests by name. Those comments already pointed at the wrong fixture and file (`DBTest` in `db_test.cc`) before this change.

Move the mirror to assets on an unlisted "third-party-deps" GitHub release, so the files live alongside the code with no separate bucket to maintain and no per-repo bandwidth quota (unlike Git LFS). Recent releases on the RocksDB release page are not polluted (https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/releases/, far down the list probably from tagging a very old release).
The compression download variables are refactored from *_DOWNLOAD_BASE (a directory URL) to *_DOWNLOAD_PREFIX (directory + "<project>-", or "...archive/v"), so each release asset can carry a project-name prefix in the otherwise flat release namespace while the upstream defaults still resolve to byte-identical URLs. The Java DEPS_URL defaults (Makefile and CMake) and the clang-format-diff.py download are repointed at the release. A comment at each dependency site links to the release edit page for adding/updating assets.

## Overview
In this PR, we introduce support for setting the RocksDB native logger through Java. As mentioned in the discussion on the [Google Group discussion](https://groups.google.com/g/rocksdb/c/xYmbEs4sqRM/m/e73E4whJAQAJ), this work is primarily motivated by the JDK 17 [performance regression in JNI thread attach/detach calls](https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8314859): the only existing RocksJava logging configuration call, `setLogger`, invokes the provided logger over the JNI.
## Changes
Specifically, these changes add support for the `devnull` and `stderr` native loggers. For the `stderr` logger, we add the ability to prefix every log with a `logPrefix`, so that it becomes possible know which database a particular log is coming from (if multiple databases are in use). The API looks like the following:
```java
Options opts = new Options();
NativeLogger stderrNativeLogger = NativeLogger.newStderrLogger(
InfoLogLevel.DEBUG_LEVEL, "[my prefix here]");
options.setLogger(stderrNativeLogger);
try (final RocksDB db = RocksDB.open(options, ...)) {...}
// Cleanup
stderrNativeLogger.close()
opts.close();
```
Note that the API to set the logger is the same, via `Options::setLogger` (or `DBOptions::setLogger`). However, it will set the RocksDB logger to be native when the provided logger is an instance of `NativeLogger`.
## Testing
Two tests have been added in `NativeLoggerTest.java`. The first test creates both the `devnull` and `stderr` loggers, and sets them on the associated `Options`. However, to avoid polluting the testing output with logs from `stderr`, only the `devnull` logger is actually used in the test. The second test does the same logic, but for `DBOptions`.
It is possible to manually verify the `stderr` logger by modifying the tests slightly, and observing that the console indeed gets cluttered with logs from `stderr`.

Summary:
### Implement new Java API get()/put()/merge() methods, and transactional variants.
The Java API methods are very inconsistent in terms of how they pass parameters (byte[], ByteBuffer), and what variants and defaulted parameters they support. We try to bring some consistency to this.
* All APIs should support calls with ByteBuffer parameters.
* Similar methods (RocksDB.get() vs Transaction.get()) should support as similar as possible sets of parameters for predictability.
* get()-like methods should provide variants where the caller supplies the target buffer, for the sake of efficiency. Allocation costs in Java can be significant when large buffers are repeatedly allocated and freed.
### API Additions
1. RockDB.get implement indirect ByteBuffers. Added indirect ByteBuffers and supporting native methods for get().
2. RocksDB.Iterator implement missing (byte[], offset, length) variants for key() and value() parameters.
3. Transaction.get() implement missing methods, based on RocksDB.get. Added ByteBuffer.get with and without column family. Added byte[]-as-target get.
4. Transaction.iterator() implement a getIterator() which defaults ReadOptions; as per RocksDB.iterator(). Rationalize support API for this and RocksDB.iterator()
5. RocksDB.merge implement ByteBuffer methods; both direct and indirect buffers. Shadow the methods of RocksDB.put; RocksDB.put only offers ByteBuffer API with explicit WriteOptions. Duplicated this with RocksDB.merge
6. Transaction.merge implement methods as per RocksDB.merge methods. Transaction is already constructed with WriteOptions, so no explicit WriteOptions methods required.
7. Transaction.mergeUntracked implement the same API methods as Transaction.merge except the ones that use assumeTracked, because that’s not a feature of merge untracked.
### Support Changes (C++)
The current JNI code in C++ supports multiple variants of methods through a number of helper functions. There are numerous TODO suggestions in the code proposing that the helpers be re-factored/shared.
We have taken a different approach for the new methods; we have created wrapper classes `JDirectBufferSlice`, `JDirectBufferPinnableSlice`, `JByteArraySlice` and `JByteArrayPinnableSlice` RAII classes which construct slices from JNI parameters and can then be passed directly to RocksDB methods. For instance, the `Java_org_rocksdb_Transaction_getDirect` method is implemented like this:
```
try {
ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::JDirectBufferSlice key(env, jkey_bb, jkey_off,
jkey_part_len);
ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::JDirectBufferPinnableSlice value(env, jval_bb, jval_off,
jval_part_len);
ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::KVException::ThrowOnError(
env, txn->Get(*read_options, column_family_handle, key.slice(),
&value.pinnable_slice()));
return value.Fetch();
} catch (const ROCKSDB_NAMESPACE::KVException& e) {
return e.Code();
}
```
Notice the try/catch mechanism with the `KVException` class, which combined with RAII and the wrapper classes means that there is no ad-hoc cleanup necessary in the JNI methods.
We propose to extend this mechanism to existing JNI methods as further work.
### Support Changes (Java)
Where there are multiple parameter-variant versions of the same method, we use fewer or just one supporting native method for all of them. This makes maintenance a bit easier and reduces the opportunity for coding errors mixing up (untyped) object handles.
In order to support this efficiently, some classes need to have default values for column families and read options added and cached so that they are not re-constructed on every method call.

Summary:
The problem
-------------
ComparatorOptions is AutoCloseable.
AbstractComparator does not hold a reference to its ComparatorOptions, but the native C++ ComparatorJniCallback holds a reference to the ComparatorOptions’ native C++ options structure. This gets deleted when the ComparatorOptions is closed, either explicitly, or as part of try-with-resources.
Later, the deleted C++ options structure gets used by the callback and the comparator options are effectively random.
The original bug report https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/8715 was caused by a GC-initiated finalization closing the still-in-use ComparatorOptions. As of 7.0, finalization of RocksDB objects no longer closes them, which worked round the reported bug, but still left ComparatorOptions with a potentially broken lifetime.
In any case, we encourage API clients to use the try-with-resources model, and so we need it to work. And if they don't use it, they leak resources.
The solution
-------------
The solution implemented here is to make a copy of the native C++ options object into the ComparatorJniCallback, rather than a reference. Then the deletion of the native object held by ComparatorOptions is *correctly* deleted when its scope is closed in try/finally.
Testing
-------
We added a regression unit test based on the original test for the reported ticket.
This checkin closes https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/8715
We expect that there are more instances of "lifecycle" bugs in the Java API. They are a major source of support time/cost, and we note that they could be addressed as a whole using the model proposed/prototyped in https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/10736

Fixes 2 related issues with JNI local references in the RocksJava API.
1. Some instances of RocksJava API JNI code appear to have misunderstood the reason for `JNIEnv->EnsureLocalCapacity()` and are carrying out bogus checks which happen to fail with some larger parameter values (many column families in a single call, very long key names or values). Remove these checks and add some regression tests for the previous failures.
2. The helper for Transaction multiGet operations (`multiGet()`, `multiGetForUpdate()`,...) is limited in the number of keys it can `get()` for because it requires a corresponding number of live local references. Refactor the helper slightly, copying out the key contents within a loop so that the references don't have to exist at the same time.

Extend the plugin architecture to allow for the inclusion, building and testing of Java and JNI components of a plugin. This will cause the JAR built by `$ make rocksdbjava` to include the extra functionality provided by the plugin, and will cause `$ make jtest` to add the java tests provided by the plugin to the tests built and run by Java testing.
The plugin's `<plugin>.mk` file can define:
```
<plugin>_JNI_NATIVE_SOURCES
<plugin>_NATIVE_JAVA_CLASSES
<plugin>_JAVA_TESTS
```
The plugin should provide java/src, java/test and java/rocksjni directories. When a plugin is required to be build it must be named in the ROCKSDB_PLUGINS environment variable (as per the plugin architecture). This now has the effect of adding the files specified by the above definitions to the appropriate parts of the build.
An example of a plugin with a Java component can be found as part of the hdfs plugin in https://github.com/riversand963/rocksdb-hdfs-env - at the time of writing the Java part of this fails tests, and needs a little work to complete, but it builds correctly under the plugin model.

Summary:
Implementation of https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/8221, plus/including extension of Java options API to allow the get() of options from RocksDB. The extension allows more comprehensive testing of options at the Java side, by validating that the options are set at the C++ side.
Variations on methods:
MutableColumnFamilyOptions.MutableColumnFamilyOptionsBuilder getOptions()
MutableDBOptions.MutableDBOptionsBuilder getDBOptions()
retrieve the options via RocksDB C++ interfaces, and parse the resulting string into one of the Java-style option objects.
This necessitated generalising the parsing of option strings in Java, which now parses the full range of option strings returned by the C++ interface, rather than a useful subset. This necessitates the list-separator being changed to :(colon) from , (comma).

Allows adding event listeners in RocksJava.
* Adds listeners getter and setter in `Options` and `DBOptions` classes.
* Adds `EventListener` Java interface and base class for implementing custom event listener callbacks - `AbstractEventListener`, which has an underlying native callback class implementing C++ `EventListener` class.
* `AbstractEventListener` class has mechanism for selectively enabling its callback methods in order to prevent invoking Java method if it is not implemented. This decreases performance cost in case only subset of event listener callback methods is needed - the JNI code for remaining "no-op" callbacks is not executed.
* The code is covered by unit tests in `EventListenerTest.java`, there are also tests added for setting/getting listeners field in `OptionsTest.java` and `DBOptionsTest.java`.

After we had a lot of failures with maven.org downloads, we
wanted an alternative location for downloading binary dependencies.
Hosting them through github would have been good in terms of
organizational and network dependencies, but that approach seems to be
awkward (fake releases, so would need a 'rocksdb-deps' repo) and
strangely complicated for Facebook policy on open source repositories.
This commit moves the downloads (that are not officially hosted by
others on github) from my personal rocksdb fork to an S3 bucket owned
by the Facebook RocksDB AWS account. Facebook employees can access
this through an internal tool, and we should be able to grant permission
to outside collaborators.
Assuming this works out, I will back-port to older branches to stabilize
their CI testing as well.

Summary:
This is a redesign of the API for RocksJava comparators with the aim of improving performance. It also simplifies the class hierarchy.
**NOTE**: This breaks backwards compatibility for existing 3rd party Comparators implemented in Java... so we need to consider carefully which release branches this goes into.
Previously when implementing a comparator in Java the developer had a choice of subclassing either `DirectComparator` or `Comparator` which would use direct and non-direct byte-buffers resepectively (via `DirectSlice` and `Slice`).
In this redesign there we have eliminated the overhead of using the Java Slice classes, and just use `ByteBuffer`s. The `ComparatorOptions` supplied when constructing a Comparator allow you to choose between direct and non-direct byte buffers by setting `useDirect`.
In addition, the `ComparatorOptions` now allow you to choose whether a ByteBuffer is reused over multiple comparator calls, by setting `maxReusedBufferSize > 0`. When buffers are reused, ComparatorOptions provides a choice of mutex type by setting `useAdaptiveMutex`.
---
[JMH benchmarks previously indicated](https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/6241#issue-356398306) that the difference between C++ and Java for implementing a comparator was ~7x slowdown in Java.
With these changes, when reusing buffers and guarding access to them via mutexes the slowdown is approximately the same. However, these changes offer a new facility to not reuse mutextes, which reduces the slowdown to ~5.5x in Java. We also offer a `thread_local` mechanism for reusing buffers, which reduces slowdown to ~5.2x in Java (closes https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/pull/4425).
These changes also form a good base for further optimisation work such as further JNI lookup caching, and JNI critical.
---
These numbers were captured without jemalloc. With jemalloc, the performance improves for all tests, and the Java slowdown reduces to between 4.8x and 5.x.

CompactRangeOptions are available the CPP API, but not in the Java API. This PR adds CompactRangeOptions to the Java API and adds an overloaded compactRange() method. See https://github.com/facebook/rocksdb/issues/4195 for the original discussion.
This change supports all fields of CompactRangeOptions, including the required enum converters in the JNI portal.
Significant changes:
- Make CompactRangeOptions available in the compactRange() for Java.
- Deprecate other compactRange() methods that have individual option params, like in the CPP code.
- Migrate rocksdb_compactrange_helper() to CompactRangeOptions.
- Add Java unit tests for CompactRangeOptions.

This is an abstraction for working with custom Comparators implemented in native C++ code from Java. Native code must directly extend `rocksdb::Comparator`. When the native code comparator is compiled into the RocksDB codebase, you can then create a Java Class, and JNI stub to wrap it.
Useful if the C++/JNI barrier overhead is too much for your applications comparator performance.
An example is provided in `java/rocksjni/native_comparator_wrapper_test.cc` and `java/src/main/java/org/rocksdb/NativeComparatorWrapperTest.java`.
